Eutrophication is the most widespread effect of urban development in coastal areas. To elucidate how nutrient loading affects the carbon pathways at the base of food chains, we quantified the carbon transfer among microbial components, from prokaryotes to microzooplankton. For this purpose, we performed two size-fractionation feeding experiments during late summer under moderate (N: 28.5 μM, P: 0.92 μM, Si: 45.8 μM) and severe (N: 173.9 μM, P: 3.5 μM, Si: 67.2 μM) cultural eutrophication in the Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina). Chemical and Biological evolution of sediments in closed circuit : I. Nitrogen and bacteria. A series of well controlled sea water closed circuit sand filters allowed the study of chemical and biological regulation processes in the sediment. Bacteria, Nitrogen chemistry and meiofauna were mainly investigated. The evolution of the different forms of nitrogen is rather similar, whatever the organic matter flow in the sediment. As long as the amount of organic input works as limiting factor, bacteria densities are proportional to its flow. Sugar cane silages are characterized by extensive yeast activity, alcohol production and great dry matter - DM - losses. Better knowledge of the fermentation process is fundamental to the development of efficient ensilage techniques for this forage. This study evaluates temporal changes in chemical composition, DM losses and epiphytic microflora in sugar cane silage. Bacillus and Lactobacillus are bacteria that usually contaminate the ethanolic fermentation by yeasts and may influence yeast viability. As microorganisms can be killed by ionizing radiation, the efficacy of gamma radiation in reducing the population of certain contaminating bacteria from sugarcane must was examined and, as a consequence, the beneficial effect of lethal doses of radiation on some parameters of yeast-based ethanolic fermentation was verified. High-wet roughages with low content of soluble carbohydrates, such as tropical grasses, should be inappropriate for producing silages of adequate quality. This study aimed to evaluate the fermentative and microbiological profiles of Marandu-grass ensilaged with pelleted citric pulp (PCP). Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst ex. A. Rich) Stapf cv. Marandu with 58 days of vegetative growth was harvested for producing experimental silages in PVC silos provided with Bünsen valves and density capacity of 900 kg m-3.
