Eutrophication is the most widespread effect of urban development in coastal areas. To elucidate how nutrient loading affects the carbon pathways at the base of food chains, we quantified the carbon transfer among microbial components, from prokaryotes to microzooplankton. For this purpose, we performed two size-fractionation feeding experiments during late summer under moderate (N: 28.5 μM, P: 0.92 μM, Si: 45.8 μM) and severe (N: 173.9 μM, P: 3.5 μM, Si: 67.2 μM) cultural eutrophication in the Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina). The quantitative and qualitative evolution of the heterotrophic bacterial community of sea water was studied throughout an experimental rearing of Penaeus japonicus in closed systems. Cluster analysis was realised on 417 strains coming from water sampled at different moments of the experiment. This collection includes 40 strains coming from a mussel used for diet and 40 strains coming from the digestive tract of one prawn after six months rearing. A series of well controlled sea water closed circuit sand filters al­lowed the study of chemical and biological regulation processes in the sediment. Evolution of bacterial communities precipitating carbonate, in Mediterranean lagoons water and sediment: Study on experimental conditions. ArchiMer

To determine if carbonate precipitation is an active or passive bacterial phenomena, factorial analysis has been realized with 880 strains isolated from different samples of sea water and muds kept in various conditions of incubation. Results show the existence of a strong anti-correlation between carbonate precipitation and amino-acid ammonification. Carbonate precipitation is not a passive phenomena linked with amino-acid ammonification.

Experimental systems for the study of bacterial degradation of pollutants from the oil industry. ArchiMer

The release of pollutants into the environment, either during normal operations or due to accidental discharges, has focussed attention on the fate and effects of xenobiotic compounds in the marine environment. This interest has been heightened by the development of the off-shore industry with the subsequent discharge of biocides from platforms. This paper describes the results obtained from investigations into the fate of biocides in the marine environment using continuous-culture techniques.

Viruses thrive in all types of ecosystems where life is found. They represent the most abundant biological entity of our biosphere. Though several studies have been conducted on viral abundance and dynamics in mesophilic aquatic ecosystems, these aspects remain largely unexplored in extremophilic environments, such as hot springs. In this study, prokaryotic and associated viral communities of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands hot springs were explored. First, prokaryotic cells and Virus-like particles (VLP) were enumerated in several terrestrial and inshore hot springs. Factors affecting bacterial biomass and growth in the Duplin River estuary and coastal Atlantic Ocean. ArchiMer

Bacterial numbers and growth rates were measured in coastal, planktonic systems of the Western Atlantic ocean. Seasonal responses in growth rates of the bacterial assemblage were present at some sites, but these may be related to seasonal changes in substrate supply rather than to changes in temperature. Bacterial growth rates tended to decline with increasing distance from shore. There was evidence for predator-prey population cycles in the bacteria and < 17 mu m protozoa in the Duplin River Estuary which may indicate that the bacterial assemblage serves as prey for protozoan populations. Fermentative and microbiological profile of marandu-grass ensiled with citrus pulp pellets Scientia Agricola

High-wet roughages with low content of soluble carbohydrates, such as tropical grasses, should be inappropriate for producing silages of adequate quality. This study aimed to evaluate the fermentative and microbiological profiles of Marandu-grass ensilaged with pelleted citric pulp (PCP). Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst ex. A. Rich) Stapf cv. Marandu with 58 days of vegetative growth was harvested for producing experimental silages in PVC silos provided with Bünsen valves and density capacity of 900 kg m-3. Treatments were three PCP levels (0, 50 and 100 g kg-1 of fresh forage) and seven times (1, 4, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 56 days) after sealing. Field enhanced bacterial sample stacking in isotachophoresis using wide-bore capillaries ArchiMer

The isotachophoretic analysis of different bacterial strains was studied using capillaries with different internal diameters from 50 to 250 mu m. Several injection modes were investigated and compared in order to improve the limit of detection of bacteria by capillary isotachophoresis. A system suitability test obtained from the separation voltage was developed to ensure reliable results. As expected, the use of wider bore capillaries improved the analytical sensitivity of the isotachophoretic method when compared to the 50 mu m capillary. With the optimized conditions, the isotachophoretic method presented in this work allows the quantification of Erwinia carotovora (Gram negative bacteria) with a limit of detection as low as similar to 3000 cells mL(-1)....

From microcosm studies, V. cholerae and related potential human pathogens enter a viable but nonculturable state. Direct viable counts by epifluorescent microscopy consistently remain higher than corresponding plate counts. Thus, the assumption that pathogens "die-off" or "decay" in the marine environment must be re-evaluated, since stressed or nutrient-starved cells are unable to grow and be enumerated by standard plate count methods. Genetic diversity of Rhizobia isolates from Amazon soils using cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) as trap plant BJM

The aim of this work was to characterize rhizobia isolated from the root nodules of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) plants cultivated in Amazon soils samples by means of ARDRA (Amplified rDNA Restriction Analysis) and sequencing analysis, to know their phylogenetic relationships. The 16S rRNA gene of rhizobia was amplified by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) using universal primers Y1 and Y3. The amplification products were analyzed by the restriction enzymes HinfI, MspI and DdeI and also sequenced with Y1, Y3 and six intermediate primers.
